Our brains generate different frequencies of brain waves depending upon what we are doing.  These frequencies  are related to different states of mental awareness. A sleeping persons brainwaves are much different compared to the brainwaves of a person in the awake state or relaxed state.

Association To Mental State
Beta 12hz - 38hz The Beta state is characterized by being the wide awake state and are the dominate frequencies while we are in this state. Energy levels, concentration, alertness, attentiveness and emotional state can be improved by stimulating the brain using Beta frequency.
Alpha 8hz - 12hz The Alpha state is characterized by being awake but relaxed. The brain in Alpha state is in the twilight dreamy world and is not processing much information. A person is in this state just before drifting off to sleep or waking in the morning. This is a very receptive mental state and is good for self-hypnosis, re-programming, accelerated learning etc.
Theta 3hz - 8hz The Theta state is characterized by extreme relaxation or light sleep. The Theta state is excellent for hypnosis, positive suggestion, positive imagery and much more.
Delta 0.2hz - 3hz The Delta state is a deep dreamless sleep. This is the slowest band of brainwave frequencies. When a person is in Delta their body is healing and resetting itself. Delta is a dreamless unconscious state.
